Jim Alexander's Bio:

Jim Alexander is recipient of a myriad awards for his Documentary Photograpy. He is identified as a “participant observer”, recognizing the undeniable influence of his mere presence, but pleading allegiance to the role of the spectator. Since acquiring his first camera in 1952, his personal experiences and consumption of Black scholarship and thought has increasingly informed his camera.  His photographs continuously highlight moments of extreme significance in the struggle for freedom, rendering Black life and culture in light rather than darkness. While his photographs are testimonies to the events that have shaped Black culture and human rights for 50 years, they also capture representatives of that period including: Nelson Mandela, Maynard H. Jackson, Sonia Sanchez, Gwendolyn Brooks, John Lewis, Coretta Scott King, Duke Ellington and Romare Bearden, along with many others A native of New Jersey, Jim was fortunate to be mentored by the well known Gordon Parks. His work has graced many museum exhibits and continues to document history of the African American dignitaries, and life.

While Mr. Alexander is familiar with all camera and film formats in service to his teaching and mentoring work, he prefers the 35mm format because of its’ adaptability to documentary work.a photographer, curator, lecturer and teacher.
